has been writing since she was a young mother living on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, in the early 1960s. She has published juvenile fiction and nonfiction set in Kenya (under the name Betty Dinneen), essays on Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, poems, and novels inspired by her love of the works of Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte.
Ms. Newark is the author of The Darcys Give a Ball (SourceBooks 2008), previously published under the title Consequence: Or Whatever Happened to Charlotte Lucas. Her novel Jane Eyre’s Daughter is also forthcoming from SourceBooks.
She has been a popular speaker at regional and general meetings of the Jane Austen Society of North America. Born and raised in London, she spent part of her 20s and early 30s in Borneo and East Africa. She has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1964. She has two adult children and seven beautiful and intelligent grandchildren.
